Ardross has a history stretching back thousands of years and is part of Whadjuk Noongar Country. The nearby Canning River, known as Djarlgar Beelier, was an important place for the Whadjuk people, providing food, water and other resources. European settlement gradually transformed the wider Canning district from rural farmland and estates into the suburbs we know today. Ardross itself takes its name from Sir Alexander Percival Matheson, a Scottish businessman who gave the name to Ardross Street during the development of neighbouring Applecross.
One of Ardross’s most interesting landmarks is Wireless Hill, where a radio communication station was established in 1913, making it an important part of Western Australia’s early communications history. Today, Ardross is a leafy southern suburb known for its parks, family homes and proximity to the Canning River, combining ancient Noongar heritage with more than a century of modern suburban history.
