Local History About Brentwood from a Local Company
Brentwood has a history stretching back thousands of years and is part of Whadjuk Noongar Country. The area around Bull Creek and the Canning River was an important camping, fishing and food-gathering area for Aboriginal people, with the waterways providing abundant food, water and other resources. Today, the Canning River is known as Djarlgarro Beelier, and the nearby Bull Creek area as Gabbiljee, meaning “the watery place at the end of the river.”
European settlement brought farming and the establishment of the historic Grasmere homestead, associated with the Bateman family, early pioneers of the area. Brentwood was later developed as a suburban area in the 1950s, with its name taken from a town in Essex, England, connected to the Bateman family. Today, Brentwood is a small, leafy riverside suburb known for its parks, wetlands and close connection to the Canning River — a far cry from the farming and bushland landscape that once occupied the area.
